Honda hopes to hit the mainstream with its Prius-rivalling Insight hybrid, which it has announced will go on sale at $29,990 (about $10,000 less than the Prius). That said, it cannot match the Toyota's efficiency, with a fuel consumption figure of 4.6L/100km (Prius: 3.9L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 109g/km (versus 89g/km).

Audi used the 2008 Paris motor show to present the “A1 Sportback concept study”, which is a five-door body style derivative of the upcoming A1. The A1 will spawn a new compact model family that comprises three and five-door hatch, high-performance S1 and RS1 versions and perhaps even a new baby convertible.

Audi's Q7 gets a brace of new engines for its midlife revamp, with an eight-speed automatic replacing the six-speed unit on all but the flagship V12 TDI. Along with cosmetic chages, there's a second-generation 3.0 TDI V6 and one of two new supercharged 3.0-litre ’TFSI’ petrol V6s replace the current 4.2 FSI V8.

Lotus is expected to launch its Satria Neo RS Lotus Racing special edition model locally by December 2010. It will feature styling , aerodynamic and power upgrades. Powered by a 108kW/168Nm 1.6-litre DOHC four, the Satria RS sprints 0 to 100km in 9.2 seconds.

Released: Nov 2010

The biggest changes to the facelifted CL are under the bonnet, with engines promising more power and lower emissions. The entry-level CL500 BlueEfficiency is claimed to return 23 per cent lower fuel consumption while CO2 emissions reduce from 288 to 224g/km. Meanwhile, fire-breathing AMG versions will debut AMG's new 5.5-litre twin-turbo, direct-injection V8.

Model: Triton - Club Cab

Released: Nov 2010

Mitsubishi will reintroduce a third body derivative of the Triton one-tonner with the four-door/five-seat Club Cab. To be available in at least 4x4 diesel form, the Club Cab variant will join the cab-chassis/single-cab and dual-cab versions of the Triton ute for the first time in five years.

Model: Gallardo - LP 570-4 Blancpain Edition

Released: Nov 2010

A collaboration between Lamborghini and Swiss watch-maker Blancpain, the limited-run LP 570-4 will have a large fixed rear spoiler and unique engine cover derived directly from the race cars in the one-make Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo racing series. A dry weight of just 1340kg combined with a 419kW 5.2-litre V10 will result in acceleration from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Citroen’s all-new Mark II five-door C3 will arrive in the third quarter of 2010. The company expects to tick the boxes on a similar three-model, three-engine range as the first generation. With its ground-breaking ‘high forehead’ Zenith windscreen, increased roominess and new levels of refinement.

Released: Nov 2010

Volvo will unveil its second-generation S60 sedan in locally in late 2010. Based on the S60 concept from Detroit 2008 (pictured), it shares the same platform as the XC70 and S80 models. The S60 will herald a new cabin architecture, a different engine direction and updated safety-related technologies.

NISSAN is expected to extend the model range of its next-generation Micra light car by adding an entry-level three-door manual version in 2011. Micra sourcing will most likely switch from Japan to Thailand as Nissan seeks to become price competitive against the top-selling Toyota Yaris and Hyundai’s Getz.

Expected to arrive in Australia with a 2.0-litre petrol four teamed with a CVT auto, the Megane CC will take on the likes of the Mini Cabrio, Volkswagen Eos and Peugeot 308 CC. The unique glass roof, consisting of two glass panels that fold into the boot with hydraulic rams will remain, but will be 10 per cent bigger.

The SX Lancer variant will be positioned between the entry-level ES and mid-range VR models. Aimed at retail buyers, the Lancer SX will be sportier than the Lancer ES, which will in effect become Mitsubishi's fleet special.

Audi’s much-anticipated R8 Spyder will set a price benchmark for Audi in Australia. The Spyder has the same powerful stance as the coupe with a design treatment behind the cabin including a couple of striking arched cowls extending to the spoiler lip. Like all Audi convertibles the R8 Spyder has a textile roof.

Model: Fiesta

With production shifting to Thailand, a Fiesta Sedan will join the range for the first time, with petrol powered sedans receiving automatic-only transmissions in the guise of Ford's Powershift (similar to Volkswagen's DSG) gearbox, linked to a 1.6-litre Ti-VCT engine packing 89kW and 151Nm of torque. The 66kW/200Nm 1.6 TDCi diesel engine option is closely related to that of the co-existing Econetic model and will be distribute power through a five-speed manual transmission.

Model: Focus - RS

Released: Oct 2010

Just 315 examples of the three-door Focus RS will be made available here, priced at $59,990. It will be powered by a version of Volvo’s turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine which sends 224kW and 440Nm of torque to the front wheels through Ford’s patented ‘RevoKnuckle’, a Quaife automatic torque-biasing helical limited-slip front differential.

Kia is expected to add a new 200kW 3.5 litre V6 to its recently released new-generation Sorento, launched in Australia in late 2009. This will bring the number of powertrains to three, starting with the 128kW/225Nm 2.4 lite four cylinder, to the powerful, yet economical 145kW/436Nm 2.2 litre diesel range.

The i-MiEV electric vehicle is a strong possibility for local release, following positive feedback from prospective private and corporate customers. Based on the ‘i’ mini-car, the zero-emissions i-MiEV uses a 47kW electric motor powered by a 330-volt lithium-ion battery.

Honda’s next-generation flagship sedan is expected to be powered by a V8 engine with cylinder deactivation technology. Also tipped to adopt an all-wheel driveline and four-wheel steering, the Legend's Australian launch timing is expected to be in 2010. Pricing should be close to $100,000.

The new-generation Sportage shares its platform with the Tucson-replacing ix35 from sibling brand Hyundai. Design cues from the Kia Sorento, such as the roofline and windshield rake, are evident. The new Sportage will likely include a 2.0-litre petrol powerplant with 123 kW from the ix35, as well as a 2.0-litre R-series diesel with 135kW.

Porsche is odds-on to become Australia’s first European brand to offer petrol-electric power. The next-generation Cayenne due for release around 2010, and Porsche will introduce a hybrid version using a 3.6-litre V6 and six-speed Tiptronic transmission with a 34kW electric motor.

Holden has confirmed that the new-generation global mini-car, the Matiz is under consideration for sale locally as the Spark. The Spark will allow Holden to compete in the sub-light segment, with a sub-Barina model against small cars sourced from Asia. The Spark is powered by a 51kW 995cc four-cylinder engine.

Audi-BMW fight ratchets up a notch as RS5 Coupe targets M3. Powered by a free-revving 331kW/430Nm 4.2 V8 that drives all four wheels via a seven-speed ‘S-tronic’ dual-clutch transmission, the RS5 will blast to 100km/h in a claimed 4.6 seconds – the same figure quoted by BMW for the M3 Coupe.

Lexus officials have stated that the GS large sedan - powered by the IS-F’s 5.0-litre V8 and badged as the GS-F – is likely to be the next ‘F’ badged model to reach Australia. Expect a 5.0-litre DOHC V8 that produces more than 300kW/474Nm, mated to the LS460's eight-speed automatic.

Lexus’ IS-F sedan will be joined by a “hard-top convertible” powered by the same rear drive 311kW at 6600rpm and 505Nm of torque from a heady 5200rpm from its 5.0-litre V8, via an eight-speed automatic paddle-shift transmission with three-stage VSC stability control. Expect a $150K price tag.

Kia's second-generation Hyundai Sonata/i40-derived Magentis is due locally by the third quarter of 2010. It will compete against the likes of the Toyota Camry, Mazda6 and Subaru Liberty. Power will be fed to the front wheels by a version of Hyundai’s new 150kW 2.4 Theta II GDI engine, via a new six-speed auto transmission.

Released: Oct 2010

Holden will discontinue the Statesman and offer just two long-wheelbase Caprice models, with the 3.6-litre Caprice V6 replacing the Statesman V6 as the base model and offering a four per cent fuel saving over the outgoing model. The V8 model will use two per cent less fuel and be capable of running on E85 bio-ethanol but power output is 10kW down, to 260kW.

Released: Oct 2010

Holden is developing an E85-compatible version of its direct-injection SIDI powertrain. This will represent the next major upgrade for its volume-selling Commodore range. Holden expects the ethanol-powered vehicles to account for up to 30 per cent of all Commodore sales when introduced for sale from late 2010.

The Punto range will be graced by a top-shelf Abarth SuperSport version in the third quarter, powered by a 111kW 1.4 turbo-petrol four. Driving through a six-speed manual, the Punto Abarth ‘essesse’ is good for 8.2-second 0-100km/h times.

Released: Sep 2010

Citroen will launch its DS3 range by mid-2010. Australia will be offered the 82kW 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine and the 112kW turbo-petrol engine. Both will be available here with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Priced from $30,000, the DS3 competes directly with BMW’s Mini and Fiat's 500.

Cheaper to buy thanks to production moving to Turkey, the new, more conservatively-styled Megane will aim to compete head-on with its Japanese, European and South Korean rivals in terms of packaging, performance and equipment levels. A priority for the French firm is raising interior quality and ambience as well as refining the shut lines between body panels.

A midlife makeover for BMW's mid-size two-door models will include more performance and efficiency – plus manual transmission with idle-stop – for the base 320d and greater flexibility from the new-look 335i M Sport's turbo six engine. Meanwhile, M3 models will also get idle-stop to reduce fuel consumption.

Toyota 's facelifted Corolla sedan range is expected in March. will adopt side airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) standard across its top-selling Corolla sedan range. The sedan gains an extensive facelift that includes a new-look nose and tail, plus additional popular gadgetry such as Bluetooth and USB connection.

Proton will extend on its bumper 2010 new model launch with a third quarter release of an ‘LE’ manual and auto versions of the 1.6-litre Persona due locally in August. An upgrade in specification and interior/exterior trim, are expected.

An upgraded Punto range is due to be launched late 2010. Minor interior and exterior trim changes are expected. Sitting below the Outlander, the five-seater will compete with Nissan’s Dualis and Hyundai’s Tucson. Power is via a 2.0-litre petrol engine, mated to both manual and dual-clutch auto transmissions.

Released: Jul 2010

Alfa Romeo will launch a new model variant to its MiTo range by mid-2010 - the Cloverleaf model-leader, which is powered by a 125kW 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine, via a new six-speed manual transmission. A self-shifting DDCT gearbox, Alfa’s first double-clutch transmission, is also expected to be added to the MiTo range.
