Sharper front-end styling and a suite of new petrol and diesel engines highlight the facelift for Volkswagen's Polo light-car range later this year. One of the new diesel powertrains is capable of sipping just 3.2L/100km on the Euro cycle, but it is not clear whether this is coming to Australia. Expect the GTI hot-hatch to arrive in 2015 with the option of a manual gearbox.

Volkswagen will launch the hardcore 'R' version of its Golf 7 in the first half of the year, likely to be powered by the same 206kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from the Audi S3 that has been de-tuned because of our hot weather. At the same time VW will introduce the Golf GTI Performance which boosts power over the regular GTI by 7kW.

The wraps came off the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf in September 2012 revealing an evolutionary new design. Based on an entirely new platform, Volkswagen claims the new Golf will be lighter, more fuel efficient and safer than the model it replaces.

More muscular and masculine than the New Beetle that revived the nameplate in 1998, the 2012 Beetle again will share its underpinnings with the VW Golf. Bigger dimensions are expected to provide a roomier cabin. Expect a choice of three TSI petrol and two TDI diesel engines ranging from 77kW to 147kW.

Volkswagen’s 3540mm-long city car is based on Volkswagen’s new transverse modular platform and debuts international debut at the 2011 Frankfurt show. Volkswagen will introduce its facelifted four-door coupe to the local market in 2012 with a new nose and tail but minus the 'Passat' badge carried by the previous model. By simply calling it CC, the German brand will hope to dinstinguish the car from its more humble siblings in the Passat family.

Volkswagen will add a single cab variant to its Amarok ute range in mid-2012, featuring the same engine and transmission line-up as its dual cab sibling. A 2.0-litre petrol engine and an eight-speed automatic will also join the range by mid-year.

Released: Jan 2012

VW Australia has given the green light to the most powerful version of Volkswagen’s sleek three-door ‘coupe’, the Scirocco R. Powered by a 188kW 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine but with front-drive and weighing less than the four-paw Golf R, it should make for an exciting drive.

The convertible version of the Mk6 Golf is set to return to the VW range for the first time since 2002. The cabriolet will feature a folding canvas roof which will differentiate it from the brand’s flagship Eos range. A local release in late 2011 is likely.

Released: Sep 2011

200 examples of the 35th anniversary Golf GTI will make it to Oz. Peak power and torque of 173kW/300Nm are 18kW and 20Nm up on the standard GTI, reducing the 0-100 run from 6.9 seconds to 6.6. Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, dark-tinted tail-lights, '35' badges, unique 18-inch alloys and more aggressive side skirts mark out the special GTI.

The new longer, roomier Jetta will be sourced from VW’s North American plant in Puebla, Mexico. Similar engine and transmission packages to the Golf on which it is based are likely although VW is keen to distance the Jetta from being just a Golf sedan – it claims that the design has shifted so far from Golf that the new Jetta is “just as independent as a CC or Tiguan”.

Volkswagen's redesigned 2011 Touareg will carry more safety, refinement, technology and features, but significantly less weight for improved efficiency and better driveability. It will also receive a new eight-speed automatic transmissionand be powered by an all-V6 selection of petrol and diesel powerplants that promise efficiency gains of up to 20 per cent.

Released: May 2011

Volkswagen has had a change of heart and decided that the Golf BlueMotion will now be coming to Australia. It promises to be the most economical vehicle of its size in Australia, edging out the latest Toyota Prius in the combined fuel consumption average stakes by the smallest of margins – 3.8L/100km against the petrol-electric hybrid’s 3.9L/100km figure.

Released: May 2011

Updated Eos will bring the styling into line with the rest of the 2011 VW range. The four-seater folding hardtop will feature drive-trains and interior components from the Mk6 Golf, as well as hill start assist. Prices are unchanged, starting at $46 990 for the 103TDI and $48 990 for the 155TSI. It is scheduled for a mid-2011 release.

Volkswagen is going high-tech with the redesigned Passat and offering trickle-down luxuries from its higher models plus safety gadgets such as automatic emergency braking and fatigue detection. The BlueMotion model will consume a hybrid-like 4.2L/100km, emit just 109g/km of CO2 and have a theoretical tank range of more than 1600km.

Volkswagen's first twin-cab ute, the Amarok (the official support vehicle for the 2010 Dakar Rally) will be built in Argentina. The launch engine is likely to be a 120kW/400Nm twin-turbo 2.0-litre TDI unit, with petrol, automatic and single-cab variants to arrive late in 2011.

The Golf GTD is VW’s first true diesel-powered performance Golf, replacing the short-lived Golf V GT TDI. The GTD runs 17-inch alloys and comes with GTI headlights, grille and bumpers.

Volkswagen will launch its fifth-generation Polo range by mid-2010. Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its most potent ‘R’ model yet – the Passat R36. Tipped to go on sale in both sedan and wagon form here in the third quarter of 2007, the R36 employs a new 225kW 3.6-litre FSI V6, paired with a six-speed DSG gearbox channelling drive to all four wheels.

Volkswagen’s Golf-based Tiguan compact SUV arrives in May. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel 103TDI will be priced at $35,990 (plus $2300 for a six-speed auto) and the 2.0-litre petrol-engined 147TSI auto at $42,990. In the third quarter comes the detuned petrol 125TSI, priced from $33,990 ($36,290 auto).

March 2007 will see the local release of Volkswagen's striking Eos convertible, production of which was brought forward from July to March 2006. A belated successor for the previous-generation Golf cabrio, the four-seater coupe-convertible is dimensionally half way between Golf and Passat.

Released: Mar 2007

The large van and cab-chassis Crafter replaces LT as VW’s large Sprinter commercial van rival, and is regarded as the third-generation LT. The all-new Crafter bears little resemblance to its predecessor and offers a variety of wheelbases, load compartment lengths and roof heights.

Released: Aug 2006

The Golf range will be capped off in August by the range-topping R32 replacement, this time as a full-time member of the Golf line-up and available in both three and five-door bodystyles. The new R32 features 4Motion AWD and a 184kW/320Nm 3.2-litre V6 to out-power the muscular Golf GTI.
