Released: Mar 2013

Mazda will respond to an influx of new compact SUV models in 2013 by shoe-horning the more powerful 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G engine from its Mazda6 into the CX-5. The 2.5-litre unit will be available in petrol all-wheel drive models and is expected to be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It will deliver 25kW more power than the 2.0-litre unit with an output of 138kW/250Nm.

The third-generation Mazda6 will hit the market in late 2012, in both sedan and wagon bodystyles powered by SkyActiv petrol or diesel engines. All models will feature a host of new green technology, including i-Eloop regenerative braking.

Mazda’s facelifted CX-9 will arrive in late 2012 with a new nose based on the ‘Kodo’ design language to carry the model through for at least another three years. The updated seven-seat SUV will feature minor changes to the interior and a refreshed rear end. The 2013 CX-9 won’t get Mazda’s fuel-saving Skyactiv drivetrain but that will no doubt appear in the next generation.

The production-ready CX-5 crossover will resemble the slinky Minagi SUV concept, from the 2011 Geneva show, displaying Mazda’s energetic new Kodo design theme. Engine choices will include a 113kW/191Nm petrol and a new 2.2-litre diesel producing up to 136kW/420Nm.

Mazda’s CX-7’s midlife update was revealed at Toronto. Changes include new sheet metal, revised airdam and larger grille, updated interior and additional powertrains. As well as the 2.3-litre turbo engine, Mazda may include 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines.

Released: Dec 2008

Mazda will add turbo-diesel power to its Mazda6 hatch and wagon range by the end of 2008. The diesel Six's all-new 136kW/400Nm 2.2-litre common-rail direct-injection four-cylinder engine, with manual transmission only, is capable of returning 5.9L/100km. Pricing is expected to start under $40,000.

Released: Jul 2008

Revealed at the 2008 Detroit show, the facelifted RX-8 sports restyled front and rear bumpers, a bolder grille, upgraded front and rear lights, and new five-spoke alloy wheels. The more aggressive styled RX-8 also gains a new six-speed automatic transmission for the first time.

It won't be as sweet as Mazda Australia's locally developed MX-5 SP turbo was, but the first factory MX-5 turbo's 121kW/206Nm will still be a fitting swansong for the world's top-selling sportscar, which is due for replacement in 2005. On sale from late March or April at $45,490, it will be known as MX-5 SE here.

The base Tribute 4WD loses the breathless old 97kW 2.0-litre for a 108kW/201Nm 2.3 'four' similar to the Mazda 6's unit but minus the SVT variable valve timing device. The auto-only 2004 range also sees improved brakes, new cabin trim, more standard features and revised instrumentation.

Fresh from its Frankfurt world debut in September 2003 and its Oz premiere a month later, the all-new Mazda3 sedan and hatch range goes on sale here from January 2004, replacing 323.
