Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic was used to lower the weight which is down by 80kg compared to the outgoing M3.

BMW has fast-tracked development of its first hybrid supercar and confirmed it will put the vehicle into production, remaining "99 per cent" faithful to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept from the 2009 Frankfurt show.

The concept offered M3 performance but Prius fuel economy, thanks to a 120kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel engine in combination with two electric motors.

BMW will be first of the big three German luxury brands to unleash a hybrid onto the Australian market. The hybrid 5 Series will hit 100km/h in 5.9s but return fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

BMW previewed an additional model to its 120d range at the Melbourne show. The 120d with manual transmission will be BMW’s most fuel-efficient model, returning 4.8L/100km. Power is by a 130kW/350Nm from the third-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It will be priced at $46,790.

BMW Australia will expand its overhauled 7 Series with the introduction of its first diesel-engine 7 Series model. Priced at $198,800, it will only be available in standard wheelbase. BMW is expected to debut its long-awaited M Double-Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) automated manual gearbox on its M3 Coupe by mid-2008. Quicker and more frugal than the manual, with claimed 0-100km/h acceleration dropping two-tenths, it also slashes average fuel consumption by half a litre per 100km.
