Volkswagen will launch the hardcore 'R' version of its Golf 7 in the first half of the year, likely to be powered by the same 206kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from the Audi S3 that has been de-tuned because of our hot weather. At the same time VW will introduce the Golf GTI Performance which boosts power over the regular GTI by 7kW.

The convertible version of the Mk6 Golf is set to return to the VW range for the first time since 2002. The cabriolet will feature a folding canvas roof which will differentiate it from the brand’s flagship Eos range. A local release in late 2011 is likely.

200 examples of the 35th anniversary Golf GTI will make it to Oz. Peak power and torque of 173kW/300Nm are 18kW and 20Nm up on the standard GTI, reducing the 0-100 run from 6.9 seconds to 6.6. Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, dark-tinted tail-lights, '35' badges, unique 18-inch alloys and more aggressive side skirts mark out the special GTI.

Volkswagen has had a change of heart and decided that the Golf BlueMotion will now be coming to Australia. It promises to be the most economical vehicle of its size in Australia, edging out the latest Toyota Prius in the combined fuel consumption average stakes by the smallest of margins – 3.8L/100km against the petrol-electric hybrid’s 3.9L/100km figure.

The most powerful Golf ever, usurping the existing Mk5 R32, the Golf R will ditch the six-cylinder engine for Volkswagen’s high-performance EA113 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol unit pumping out 199kW/350Nm, but will keep a variation of the Haldex part-time all-wheel drive system in lieu of the GTI/GTD’s front-wheel drive layout

The Golf GTD is VW’s first true diesel-powered performance Golf, replacing the short-lived Golf V GT TDI. Powered by VW’s 125kW/350Nm 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve turbo-diesel, is available in six-speed manual and (DSG) automatic forms. The GTD runs 17-inch alloys and comes with GTI headlights, grille and bumpers.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the upcoming Golf wagon will have the same petrol and diesel engine line-up as the hatchback versions when launched. Due for launch in the first quarter of 2010, the load-carrying Golf is set to offer both the 1.4-litre TSI forced-induction four-cylinder petrol engine as well as the TDI turbo diesel family.

The sixth-generation Golf GTI hatch is expected on sale in Australia in late 2009. Representing an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary upgrade of the model it replaces, the GTI carries over its fundamental chassis architecture but with a revised 155kW turbocharged 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine.
