Mercedes-Benz has announced that from 2012 it will produce a sleek wagon version of its pioneering CLS four-door coupe, said to be inspired by the first motorised Shooting Brakes that appeared in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s as luxurious, coach-built two-door wagons.

The new CLS presents a new design direction for the German luxury brand. Compared to the outgoing model, the styling is more agressive, with sharper body creases, more heavily flared wheel-arches, beefy rear side haunches and a new front-end treatment that, like the SLS AMG supercar, features a prominent separate grille dominated by a large three-pointed star badge.

AMG, Mercedes' performance arm, has a new 6.2-litre V8 engine that is set to slot under the bonnet of a range of the company's vehicles. Among them will be the CLS63 AMG four-door "coupe" and the smaller CLK63 AMG coupe and convertible. In the CLS, the new V8 generates a massive 378kW.

Mercedes revealed its much anticipated CLS four-door coupe-sedan at the 2003 Frankfurt show and later confirmed it will enter production, with Australia set to take delivery in 2005. Based on the E-class platform, the slinky four-door offers a sedan-like 829mm of rear legroom and boot volume of 470 litres.
