Model: 5 Series - ActiveHybrid 5

Released: Jun 2012

BMW will be first of the big three German luxury brands to unleash a hybrid onto the Australian market. A turbocharged petrol straight-six with a 40kW electric motor sandwiched between it and the eight-speed ZF automatic will produce a combined 250kW and 450Nm. The hybrid 5 Series will hit 100km/h in 5.9s but return fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

Released: Feb 2012

BMW will introduce two new petrol variants of its 5 Series mid-size sedan, both powered by the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine in different states of tune. The price-leading 520i will have 135kW or power, while the 528i version will have 180kW on tap.

Released: Feb 2012

The M5's replacement has been confirmed to receive a development of the twin-turbo 4.4-litre direct-injection V8 in BMW’s M-badged SUVs. With an output of at 412kW/680Nm, this is well up on the 300kW/600Nm of the outgoing model.

The 520d sedan and wagon and the 535d sedan should further increase the popularity of BMW's diesel models. The straight-six 535d diesel will deliver 220kW and 600Nm of torque to propel the 5 Series to 100km/h in under six seconds. Meanwhile, the M Sport package will preview the look of the upcoming all-new M5 performance sedan.

BMW has blurred the lines between limousine and luxury SUV with the 5 Series Gran Turismo to be launched locally in February 2010. It will be available with three of BMW’s latest turbocharged, direct-injection petrol and diesel engines, each mated to BMW’s new ZF-developed eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW has given a mild facelift to its 5 Series sedan and wagon range. Expected on sale in Australia in the second half of 2007, external changes include an extra chrome bumper strip, wider kidney-shaped grille openings, ew headlights and a revised console, including a gearshift from the new X5.

BMW will top off its all-new E60 5 Series range with the mother of all M5s in July 2005, when the fourth-generation M5 sports sedan goes on sale here with a 373kW/520Nm 5.0-litre V10 engine, priced at $226,000. The same engine will be shared by the all-new M6 coupe, also due here in (late) 2005.

Due on sale here by around October 2004 after premiering at Geneva, the all-new, fifth-generation 5 Series Touring - codenamed E60/2 - should bring all of the E60 sedan's brilliance to the luxury wagon market. That means active steering, a hybrid chassis, roomier rear seating and a slightly higher pricetag.

Released: Mar 2004

BMW will add V8 power to its all-new, fifth-generation 5 Series in March, when the 545i joins the 525i and 530i on sale Down Under. Priced at $149,900 and featuring a 245kW Valvetronic 4.4-litre V8, the 545i will feature Head-Up display, satellite-navigation and bi-Xenon adaptive headlights as standard.

BMW launched the first of its all-new, E60-codenamed 5 Series sedans in October, 2003, with the 170kW 3.0-litre straight six-powered 530i - priced at $103,400 - starring at this year's Sydney motor show. Joining 530i in November 2003 will be the base 525i, while the 545i and M5 will follow in 2004.
