SUZUKI will launch a diesel-powered Grand Vitara powered by a Renault 1.9-litre common-rail turbo engine, early in 2008. Delivering 95kW and 300Nm, and linked to a five-speed manual gearbox only. Standard equipment will include cruise control and stability control.

BMW will launch its most powerful diesel model ever in Australia – the twin-turbocharged X5 3.0sd – in the first quarter of 2008, priced from $102,800. The mighty 3.0-litre all-aluminium six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine pumps out a whopping 200kW at 4400rpm and 565Nm at 2000rpm.

In early 2008, the new ForTwo takes to the streets. The two-seater is brand new but looks similar to the popular model that launched Smart to the world. The new car gets a better-quality interior with a new Mitsubishi-joint-developed 62kW 1.0-litre turbo-petrol as well as a rumoured 33kW CDi turbo-diesel.

Peugeot Australia will add an SW-badged wagon to its 207 compact-car range early in 2008. Set to become Australia’s first premium light-car wagon, the 207 SW will be slightly smaller than the previous Toyota Corolla wagon. although significantly larger and roomier inside than the 206 SW it replaces.

Peugeot’s new 308 will be revealed at the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt in September, powered by the same 90kW 1.6-litre unit from the new 207. A 1.6-litre turbo unit co-developed with BMW and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel will also be offered. Wagon and CC versions will also join the line-up.

FPV’s ballistic new Territory-based F6 X is due for release early in 2008. Powered by the same 270kW/550Nm turbocharged 4.0-litre DOHC inline six that powers the F6 Typhoon sedan and F6 Tornado ute. Drive will be to all four wheels via the ZF six-speed automatic transmission.

The 'second-generation' Mazda6 is expected to be unveiled at September's Frankfurt motor show. Speculation suggests the new Six will grow in size and offer more luxury, using the same platform as the all-new Mondeo. Local release timing should be in the first quarter of 2008.
