Car reviews - Volvo - XC70 - SE 5-dr wagon

By BRUCE NEWTON
FROM the moment you take a seat and start operating the controls, this could only be a Volvo, with its centre vertical console that slopes toward the driver and presents a huge array of buttons that seem daunting at first, but are easily mastered within a short time. There's variable intermittent wipers, an auto-dipping rear view mirror and a driver's footrest, warning chimes and remote bootlid opener. It's not above criticism however, as the indicator stalk has stayed stubbornly on the left in the transition to right-hand drive, and there's quite a few blanks in the centre console - which always makes you wonder what you are missing out on.
Did you know?Volvo launched the world's first mass-produced wagon with a turbocharged petrol engine (fitted to the 245) in 1981
