Volvo's hottest ever model, the 220kW S60 R, employs all-wheel grip
27 Jan 2004
THIS is the most powerful mid-size Volvo yet - a fact that just might cause some general, nervous, eye-widening. But before you start thinking about massive torque steer and insurmountable traction problems, take note of this: the Volvo S60 R feeds its impressive 220kW and 400Nm of torque not just to the front wheels, but also to the rear ones. Suddenly, all that power is completely useable - even if the road surface is not exactly perfect - and torque steer is a thing of the past. At last, a properly balanced Volvo performance car. Negatives? Well, the company still has lessons to learn in suspension control and, while torque steer may be a thing of the past, turbo lag unfortunately isn’t.
