In appearance, accommodation, performance from the new-generation 3.0-litre engine and driving dynamics, this is a car for small families to revel in. Not all passengers will appreciate the sacrifice made in ride comfort. But the keen driver will.

A mid-life facelift of the E39 in late 2000 brought with it a redesigned bumper and headlights, among other things, which should see the current model out until its all-new replacement, expected in 2003.
