Tachometer (tacho)

Also referred to as a rev-counter, it is the instrument that records the rate at which the engine’s crankshaft is rotating (revolutions per minute, or rpm) and therefore aids the driver in deciding when to change gears.

The tacho is generally located in the instrument panel next to the speedo and has a ‘redline’ that shows the manufacturer’s recommended maximum revs for the engine.
