Cut-price Volkswagen Polo takes on rivals with new engines, features and safety tech
19 Aug 2014
VOLKSWAGEN markets its Polo as the little sibling of the popular Golf small hatchback and the family resemblance is clear both inside and out.
The fifth-generation Polo arrived in 2010, underwent a mild refresh in 2012 and now this heavily upgraded version is here.
In a bid to compete with the ever-popular Japanese and Korean light hatch offerings, the German car-maker has dropped the price of the baby Volkswagen by $700 to $16,290 before on-road costs.
VW also sees the Polo’s German background and the quality which goes with as the car’s edge.
With the tiny Up micro hatch now discontinued, Volkswagen is hoping the Polo will serve as a new entry point to the German brand, attracting customers with its quality and cheeky styling.
So the Polo is the mini Golf and Volkswagen is hoping you’ll play. But does the Polo have what it takes to be a major player in such a competitive segment?
