BMW’s ageing four-seater coupe and convertible get an EfficientDynamics boost
18 Nov 2009
YOU might expect a concerted efficiency drive on a small hatchback, but the sizeable BMW 650i Coupe and Convertible are not the obvious recipients of fuel-reduction measures, especially when we are talking about a car with a 270kW 4.8-litre V8 petrol powerplant purring below the svelte bonnet line. Yet this is exactly what BMW has done to its four-seater grand tourer, in an effort to keep the six-year old fresh. But is a six per cent fall in petrol consumption enough for a fashion-conscious sports car that was around when Kevin Rudd still had to answer to Mark Latham?

E63 650i Series IIReleased: Jan 2008
Ended: Nov 2009
Family Tree: 6 Series
BMW introduced a myriad of minor changes to the E63/4 6 Series Coupe and Convertible in early 2008, designed to keep the range fresh as it entered its fourth year on sale. Along with a series of new safety and convenience features, there were also changes to the ZF six-speed automatic gearbox’s functionality too, but the 270kW/490Nm 4.8-litre V8 remained much the same. The six-speed manual gearbox was also dropped by BMW.
