Ford Fairmont

XB Fairmont

1 Nov 1973

Ford went for the Mustang-look again with the handsome XB Falcon.

It ditched the XA’s fussy W-shape grille for a cleaner plastic item incorporating the 1971 Pony Car’s aggressive snout.

Larger tail-lights, smaller bumpers, a high-beam flasher/indicator stalk, standard disc brakes, inertia-reel seatbelts and improved ventilation were other XB improvements. But the 4.1 2V engine vanished.

Enjoying an almost three-year run, 220,765 versions of this car were produced. During 1973 the XB also dethroned the top-selling HQ Holden for a little while – but failed to steal the yearly sales mantle away.
