Hyundai released its reborn mid-sized Sonata in early 2015, which had not been seen in Australian showrooms under the Sonata moniker since 2010.

The Sonata was launched at a time where mid-sized sedan sales were on the decline, however Hyundai were determined to cut out a slice of the stalling segment.

The Sonata was effectively the successor to the i45 which, in other markets, carried the Sonata badge. The i45 was discontinued in Australia in 2013.

The base-level Active's 2.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivered 138kW/241Nm, which was a carry over unit shared by other Hyundai and Kia products. Official fuel use for this powertrain was 8.3L/100km.

The top-spec Premium model used a new 2.0-litre turbocharged version, is rated at 180kW/350Nm. Official combined fuel economy for the blown four-pot is rated at 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Standard equipment included six airbags, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloys and front and rear park sensors with a reversing camera, keyless entry, 4.3-inch touchscreen with six-speaker audio, Bluetooth connectivity with hands free, steering wheel mounted audio and phone controls, cruise control, 60/40 split fold rear seats and cloth interior.

Mid-spec Elite added electric folding exterior mirrors, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, smart key with push button start, hands-free boot opening, leather appointed seats, LED tail-lights and dual-zone climate control air-con.

Range-topping Premium variants gained 18-inch alloys, front parking sensors, bi-Xenon headlights, auto-dimming mirror, electronic park brake, eight-way adjustable electric front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, panoramic glass sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and rear-door sunblinds.
