Car reviews - Ford - Falcon Ute - Longreach GLi utility
7 May 2003
FORD Australia never bothered to fully update the XF ute when the EA model debuted in March 1988. That XF is really a 1979 XD Falcon ute upgraded with the 1984 XF nose cone and dashboard. But in reality, the XD ute was really just a reskinned 1972 XA utility, so its age is even more staggering. And that didn't really change that much from the 1960 XK Falcon ute anyway... no wonder, then, the 1990 VG Commodore ute seemed like generations ahead of the XH ute featured here. An upgrade of the 1993-1996 XG (at least that gained the more modern ED Falcon sedan 4.0 OHC engine instead of the ancient 4.1 OHV unit fitted to pre-'93 utes), the XH was again based on the XD body but Ford grafted the 1994-1996 EF Falcon front-end onto the old cabin secton and rear. Now while the styling may look the same as any EF Falcon sedan or wagon, it doesn't share a single panel save for the headlights, front bumper and door mirrors. At the back, the restyle is restricted to a new bumper design. And headroom, always a little tight in the older utes, benefitted slightly due to Ford adding a slightly doomed roof... and the AU Falcon ute was still a long three years away...
