Designed and developed in Japan, the chunky, retro-esque GJ series was the fourth-generation Jimny, but couldn’t be classed as all-new, since the basic ladder-frame chassis was carried over, albeit substantially revamped with more strength for better off-road capabilities.

Dimensionally the same as before, Suzuki’s tried and trusted 1.5-litre K15B four-cylinder petrol engine usurped the 62kW/110Nm 1.3L from before, delivering 75kW of power at 6000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm. Drive went either rearwards or to all four wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. The 4WD system consisted of a part-time and selectable set-up.

Along with the ladder-frame body-on-frame construction, backing up the Jimny’s off-road credentials was a beefier three-link rigid axle with coil springs at both ends, a stronger rear axle housing, a brake limited-slip differential and generous clearances.

Advances included autonomous emergency braking as well as electronic stability control, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and auto on/off high-beam headlights, while inside a 7-inch multimedia screen included a reversing camera and sat-nav. Swish!
