IN A bid to maintain a profile in the wash of light-commercial competition, Isuzu has reintroduced a limited-edition X-Runner version of its increasingly popular D-Max one-tonner.

The Thai-built ute is on sale now priced at $51,990 driveaway, with Isuzu making just 360 examples available here, and the Japanese car-maker says dealers are already suggesting they need more.

That asking price slides it in beneath Ford's Ranger XLT and Wildtrak variants at $55,890 (for the six-speed auto) and $57,390 respectively.

It's priced just above the Holden Colorado LTZ dual-cab at $50,490, Mazda's BT-50 GT dual-cab at $51,140 and the $51,740 asking price of the Toyota HiLux SR5 dual-cab, although none of the opposition pricing is drive-away.

Built from the 4WD LS-Terrain model, which normally sells for $50,800, the city-biased X-Runner can be distinguished by its exterior additions, that includes stripes and stickers, body add-ons fore and aft, a lined tray and an alloy sports 'roll' bar, and the absence of any other colour apart from a pearl white or metallic blue.

A black leather interior trim and climate control, satellite navigation, rear parking sensors, a reversing cameras, keyless entry and ignition and 17-inch alloy wheels are also on its standard features list.

The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain is unchanged from the donor model, and it produces 130kW and 380Nm (between 1800 and 2800rpm) and is teamed to either a five-speed manual or automatic with part-time 4WD and low range.

The X-Runner has also retained a warranty of five years or 130,000km, five years of roadside assistance and an ANCAP crash safety rating of five stars, as well as a new capped-price servicing program within the five-year warranty.

Isuzu introduced the X-Runner in February 2013 that was priced from $46,990 driveaway and then resurrected the moniker in March last year, offering just 660 examples.
