Future models - Mercedes-Benz - S-ClassUpdated S-Class adds comfort, tech, coloursMinor Mercedes-Benz S-Class range update due mid-2025, local timing unconfirmed30 Apr 2024 THE Mercedes-Benz S-Class gets a minor update for 2025, making the firm’s flagship sedan a little bit comfier, safer and, for good measure, a couple of additional paint options will be available.
Mercedes made the updated S-Class available for order in Europe from the end of last month, although GoAuto has yet to hear back from the firm’s local arm about Australian launch details and pricing.
Changes made to the range for this update appear minor but when the W223 S-Class launched in 2021 it represented a massive step into the future for the limo line-up.
To this end, it appears Mercedes-Benz only deems minor changes necessary as it injects the S-Class with its latest safety and infotainment technology, as well as expanding its Manufaktur customisation range for those wanting to personalise their vehicle further.
A choice of two new paint finishes will be available for the 2025 S-Class, dubbed verde silver metallic and velvet brown metallic, and the entire range gets comfort front headrests with additional cushions as standard.
It will also receive the latest automatic lane change system, augmenting the existing SAE Level 2 driving assistance for European markets, and automatic lane change will be supported on “motorway-like roads”.
The lane change system works by detecting a slower vehicle travelling ahead, allowing the S-Class to make a lane change if there is sufficient space – allowing a driverless overtake.
Some US and Canadian models already feature the system and the S-Class is available with SAE Level 3 autonomous driving under certain conditions in select markets where regulatory approvals have been granted.
Another safety addition to the updated S-Class is a new occupant presence reminder, which alerts drivers to the fact a passenger may have been left in the second-row of the vehicle.
The MBUX infotainment interface will now allow occupants to stream on-demand via the Sony Pictures RIDEVU service, while the system menu has also been tweaked to make it easier to use.
Engine options are not mentioned, suggesting the six- and eight-cylinder mild-hybrid options currently powering the range will remain, which produce up to 370kW/700Nm in flagship S580 guise.
Of course, there is also the special-protection armoured S680 Guard, which gets a V12 producing 450kW for those who need an almost-impenetrable and very rapid limousine.
