SUBARU LIBERTY 4D SEDAN (1994-1999)
THE second-generation Liberty deserved its 1994 car of the year title. The front-wheel drive LX has handling, steering and ride near the top of the class and is well equipped. The 2.2-litre, flat four engine is flexible and economical while producing enough power (94kW) to be competitive in performance with its rivals.
MITSUBISHI TS MAGNA 4D SEDAN (1994-1996)
THE Magna has the most interior space and the best ride compared to this group of rivals. The big 2.6-litre, four-cylinder engine develops enough power and torque to make it relaxing to drive with competitive performance at the expense of higher fuel consumption. The Executive level has equipment similar to the CSi Camry.
HYUNDAI SONATA 4D SEDAN (1993-1998)
THIS Sonata is much improved over earlier models with similar interior space to the Camry, good handling and lots of equipment, including a driver's airbag. Late model cars get air conditioning. The Sonata's twin camshaft, 2.0-litre engine is the most powerful of this group with 102kW and is economical but lacks low speed torque.
FORD HB/HC/HE MONDEO 4D SEDAN (1995-2000)
MONDEO never sold well here, maybe since it is small for a mid-sizer. Ford never properly marketed it either. Yet it offers brilliant steering, handling, ride and roadholding abilities. Its 2.0 engine is powerful but a little coarse when extended, The prettier '97 HC facelift is much better in every way. Big range too.
