SUZUKI first unleashed its Swift GTi quite unexpectedly during the first generation SA series' reign in 1986. That first model went like a scalded rabbit thanks to its sub-900kg weight and healthy 74kW from just 1.3 litres. And though it wasn't the last word in refinement or sophistication, we didn't mind because it was fun when such a word was foreign in most affordable small cars. Happily Suzuki not only stuck with the formula for the second-generation SF model, it improved it in the areas of comfort, handling and braking. Subsequently the Swift GTi Mk2 cornered a small but enthusiastic market for the duration of the 1990s, meeting no real rivals during that time.
