BMW shook the luxury car world with its bold E65 7 Series generation back in 2001, ushering in its new design language and iDrive computerised driver interface system, as well as new degrees of dynamic abilities. Yet niggling quality issues and some questionable detailing kept the big BMW from greatness. With the 2005 facelift now here does the Seven get any closer to heaven?

BMW's previous-generation E65 7 Series sedan arrived in Australia as a replacement for its E38 forbear in January 2002. Initially available in 735i and 740i short-wheelbase V8 guise, the range was soon extended to include the E66-codenamed, long-wheelbase 735Li and 745Li (August 2002), and then the V12-powered 760Li in May 2003.
