GY SX4

SUZUKI is making the most from the Swift’s platform architecture. The Swift has sold up a storm in most markets where it has been launched and the SX4, which uses Swift underpinnings looks set to follow.

Suzuki has sensibly opted for the high-end 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in place of 1.6-litre variants offered elsewhere. The 2.0-litre is mated to either a precise five-speed manual or four-speed auto. A 1.9-litre turbo-diesel, shared with some GM product, will not arrive in Australia.

But no matter. The front-drive 2.0-litre is a sweet-revving unit offering adequate rather than outstanding power - 107kW at 5800rpm and 184Nm at 3500rpm.

Inside, those familiar with both the Swift and Grand Vitara will recognise some of the switchgear. It’s sensibly laid out, user friendly and has a feeling of quality.

One specification is offered for Australia and among the standard kit is six-airbags, cruise control and 16-inch alloys and unusually in this segment, keyless entry and start. The car also comes with what Suzuki calls “intelligent” all-wheel dirve (i-AWD) with three switchable modes, including an automatic setting.

From September 2007, a front-wheel drive version arrived – in an all-new four-door sedan bodystyle as well as a hatch version – designed to take on the cheaper end of the small-car market.

Two versions were released – a base and an S model. The AWD hatch continued.
