Geneva show: Infiniti chooses to EMERG-E

Sneak peek: Infiniti has previously revealed this rear image of its EMERG-E range-extender concept as part of an extended teaser campaign.

Infiniti confirms name for mid-engined range-extender concept ahead of Geneva debut

INFINITI has announced its upcoming hybrid sportscar concept, which is set to make its world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 6, will be called the EMERG-E.

The confirmation comes as the latest in a series of drip-feed media releases in the lead-up to its global premiere, and follows the release of two teaser images and videos in recent months.

No further details of the EMERG-E have been provided, with Infiniti reiterating the fact it will be the brand’s first model to combine “not only a range-extender drivetrain offering vivid performance with zero emissions capability, but also one mounted in a mid-ship package for optimal handling”.

As we reported last month, when Infiniti released a new video revealing more of the car’s sleek shape than the few still images previously revealed, the sportscar will incorporate a 1.3-litre engine between its cabin and rear axle acting as a range-extender for the car’s electric powertrain.

Infiniti says the layout will deliver optimal weight distribution and therefore handling, while the GM Volt-style range-extender hybrid format provides the car with high performance (and low emissions) on the open road, along with zero-emissions running in the city.

It will represent a further technological step over the brand’s M Hybrid large sedan, which is under consideration to join Infiniti’s Australian line-up that will be launched here around September.

Initially, the local Infiniti range will comprise the BMW X5-size FX crossover, the 5 Series-rivalling M executive sedan and the G sedan, coupe and convertible models, which will be direct rivals for BMW’s 3 Series family.
