February launch for all-new Triton

MITSUBISHI Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) has locked in key specifications for its forthcoming Triton utility, which will arrive in local showrooms from February next year.

The all-new Triton, which was just released in Thailand, will feature Mitsubishi’s twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 150kW and 470Nm, a comprehensive suite of safety technology, and a substantial redesign the Japanese manufacturer says beings “increased road presence, capability and comfort” to the model.

“(The) new-gen Triton is such a significant vehicle for Mitsubishi, globally and of course in Australia,” said MMAL CEO, Shaun Westcott.

“The new model is a significant step forward in many ways, with its upgraded drivetrain, enhanced load carrying capacity, increased interior comfort and modern-day connectivity options.

“But it also retains the trademark Triton toughness, with a global vehicle development program that included Australia.

“New Triton retains incredible off-road capability, but is equally at home on the work site, the desert, the beach, the snow or in the city. We cannot wait to bring the Triton to Australian showrooms,” he said.

As revealed at the global launch, the Mitsubishi Triton will feature a bi-turbo version of Mitsubishi’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with one small, and one larger turbocharger to provide improved response and more linear torque across the rev range.

Hooked up as standard to an updated six-speed automatic transmission, the unit will be offered with both two- and four-wheel drive configurations. MMAL says a six-speed manual gearbox will be offered on “some variants post launch” and that fuel consumption and “additional driveline details” will be announced in due course.

From launch, Club- and Double Cab pick-up body styles will be available with cab-chassis variants to follow post-launch.

MMAL will offer local buyers what it says is a “highly recognisable” model structure at launch with GLX, GLX+, GLS and GSR grades available. The GLS grade will again be available with a leather upholstery option for dual-cab variants.

Triton GLX and GLX+ feature Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system while GLX+ variants add a rear differential lock. GLS and GSR grades add Mitsubishi’s renowned Super Select II 4WD system, adding a centre differential lock and updated drive select system with Eco mode and separate Mud and Snow modes.

Importantly, the design of the new Triton brings improved aerodynamic benefits to help reduce fuel consumption. Mitsubishi says a reduction in drag of 8.1 per cent has been achieved from the redesign, while at the same time offering a broader stance, new-look alloy wheels, and higher quality finishes. Two new paint colours will be offered: Blade Silver and GSR-only Yamabuki Orange.

The larger sixth generation Triton now crosses the tape at 5320mm in length (+15mm), 1865mm in width (+50mm), and rides on a significantly longer 3130mm wheelbase (+130mm). The tray length grows to 1555mm (+35mm) in dual-cab guise, while inside, interior shoulder rooms jumps to 1479mm (+49mm) with +40mm more space between the front seat passengers.

Towing capacity also increases, now matching most rivals in the segment at 3500kg (+400kg).

Safety technologies for the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton will now include a driver monitoring system, front and rear AEB, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian and cyclist detection and junction assist, active yaw control, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control (automatic models only), front and rear cross-traffic alerts, blind spot warning and intervention, and lane departure warning and prevention.

For the first time, a centre airbag is also included.

The larger cabin also plays host to a 9.0-inch central infotainment cluster across the range, a 7.0-inch ‘Meter Cluster’ (digital instrument cluster), native satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control.

As with the current range, the new Triton will again be backed by MMAL’s 10/10 (ten-year) warranty and capped-price servicing program.

Australian-market production of the new-gen Triton will commence in Thailand in December, 2023 with expected showroom arrivals in February, 2024. MMAL will provide further detail relating to price, specification, and accessory packaging closer to the model’s local launch.
