HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
THE last Japanese-built Accord is all about excellent performance, fuel economy and reliability thanks to smart Honda and utterly reliable technology. Grey rinse image, high cost of parts and service and a dull, low-spec interior erode appeal of the EXi, but the sportier VTi-S has plenty to offer keen drivers and the family person alike.
PEUGEOT 405 4D SEDAN (1993-1996)
STILL-BEAUTIFUL Pininfarina design plus torquey performance, good fuel economy, fantastic chassis and great touring ability make the charming 405 the budget driver's choice here. Also practical, well-built, bug-free, comfortable and long-lasting. And it comes in a diesel wagon too, available here until 1998.
CITROEN XANTIA 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998)
CAPABLE, beautiful, versatile, roomy and satisfying, the under-rated, well-equipped Xantia is a tough and reliable five-door hatchback with space for people and parcels. Hydro-pneumatic suspension is well suited to Australian conditions, while 2.0 engine is torquey. Needs the service schedule followed.
SAAB 900 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1997)
STRONG, safe and quirky, the swift Swede stacks up very well second-hand. Sweet twin cam, four-cylinder engine is a highlight but uninspiring handling and a firm ride are not. Well-equipped interior is impeccably built and ergonomically sound. Parts and servicing can be a little expensive, but the ownership experience is worth it.
