Overview

Australia’s love affair with utes takes a big step up with the Ram 2500 Laramie

15 Dec 2016

THE North American truck market dwarfs many other markets for volume in the same way the vehicles within it cast a shadow over conventional vehicles.

So far this year the US market has had a three per cent increase in full-sized pick-up truck sales to 1.6 million sales - that’s more than the annual vehicle sales record for Australia.

Australians have had passenger-car based Holden and Ford utes in their hearts since the 1930s when Ford first introduced the unorthodox vehicles, but sadly these vehicles will soon be gone.

More recently, that affection has been heaped upon dual cab utes with workhorse heritage and now American Special Vehicles – a joint-venture between automotive importer Ateco Automotive and the Walkinshaw Automotive Group – is bringing Ram trucks to Australia.

The latter is responsible for what the company is calling “re-manufacturing” of the Ram for Australia – it’s more than just a RHD conversion.

Boaties and equestrians alike are looking fondly and seriously at the brawny ute, having bought more than 250 of them so far this year.
