SUBARU LIBERTY 4D SEDAN (1989-1994)
The front-wheel drive Subaru uses a 100kW 2.2-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine married to either a four-speed auto or five-speed manual gearbox. A spacious, nicely equipped and well-made sedan, the Liberty can be expensive to run and maintain of neglected. Boxy styling not to everybody's taste.
MAZDA 626 4D SEDAN (1992-1997)
OTHERWISE known (with minor styling changes) as the Ford Telstar. Available in two body styles, the award-winning 626 appeals with a spacious and comfy cabin, keen ride and handling characteristics and high quality build. A sweet-spinning 2.0 'four' cylinder or 2.5 V6 are the engine options.
HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1989-1993)
HONDA has a reputation for engineering excellence and quality, although servicing and repairs can be expensive. The Accord is powered by a 2.2 four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels through a four-speed auto or five-speed manual transmission. Central locking, power mirrors, power steering and power windows are standard but air-conditioning is not.
TOYOTA CRESSIDA 4D SEDAN (1988-1993)
POWERED by an inline, six-cylinder, twin camshaft, four-valve engine developing 142kW, the Cressida has impressive performance. Beautifully finished with a long list of extras. Available with four-speed automatic transmission only, driving the rear wheels. All-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes give excellent road manners.
