BMW X4

X4

1 Jul 2014

BMW first showed off its new medium-sized SUV in concept guise back in 2013 at the Shanghai Auto Show, before an official launch during the 2014 New York International Auto Show.

Arriving on Australian shores in 2014, BMW was looking to take sales from SUV rivals such as the Audi Q5 and Range Rover Evoque.

Featuring styling cues borrowed from its controversial X6 big brother and built upon the same platform as the BMW X3, the BMW X4 was described as the first 'Sports Activity Vehicle' in the mid-size premium segment.

The entry level X4 was powered by a 135kW/270Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine and was complimented by the entry level diesel variant with a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre oil burner. The next step up to the xDrive28i received a 225kW/400Nm petrol unit and the top-spec xDrive30d had a 190kW/560Nm 3.0-litre diesel engine.

BMW started the trend of coupe-style SUVs with the X6 in 2008 and now the X4, but arch-rival Mercedes-Benz has since developed its own take on the theme with the MLC concept due for production in 2015.
