New car tsunami headed to Australia in 2024

Australian buyers to be spoilt for choice this year as dozens of all-new cars hit the market

12 Jan 2024

FOLLOWING all-time record sales in 2023, this year is shaping up to be just as bouyant.

Tempered by cost of living pressures – including escalating house and food prices, high rent and increasing transportation costs – inflation appears to now be trending down, which may see interest rates ease.

But it is the arrival of a new model which always attracts a price rise and, accordingly, new car prices have risen across the board in 2023 as manufacturers seem to be “making hay while the sun shines”.

Increases of $10K and more were observed at some marques – and this on top of delivery delays of up to six months or more at some importers.

Against this backdrop is the expected arrival across 2024 of numerous desirable new vehicles along with upgrades/facelifts to many existing models.

Australia’s uptake of pure electric vehicles will no doubt continue with more offerings from mainly Asia and some from Europe and the US to assuage climate conscious buyers.

Expect sales of one tonne utes to skyrocket following the February arrival of a new generation Mitsubishi Triton and, later, a mild hybrid Toyota Hilux.. not to mention our continuing love affair with the soon-to-be-updated  new Ford Ranger.

The Isuzu Ute D-Max also gets a tweak this year and possibly hybrid power as well.

Ridgey-didge four-wheel drive buyers will also no doubt be lining up for a raft of new models. In 2024, we’ll see the new-generation Toyota LandCruiser Prado and Lexus GX make an appearance, alongside many others.

Driven by practicalities and choice, the trend for family vehicle buyers towards Small, Medium and Large segment SUVs will continue particularly in the light of such an extensive choice.

And even the sports car segment will enjoy a fillip from the arrival of a new gen’ Ford Mustang the much-anticipated MG Cyberster BEV and many others.

Here is a look at what is expected in local dealerships in 2024, by segment.
