Isuzu D-Max range grows for 2024

IUA overhauls D-Max for 2024 with widespread updates and a new variant, pricing detailed

26 Apr 2024

ISUZU Ute Australia has launched what it says is the most comprehensive facelift to its latest-generation D-MAX since the third-generation model debuted in 2020, with more tech, safety, and revised styling.

Despite being the third best-selling vehicle in Australia in 2023, Isuzu listened to media and customer feedback, updating many of the known bugbears as it chases down its nearest competitor - the Toyota HiLux.

Pricing across the range, however, has increased by between $500 and $3000, but discounted drive-away prices for base 1.9-litre SX 4x2 ($32,490) and top-of-the-line X-Terrain ($67,990) remain.

For the increased sticker price, the technology and safety improvements do bring the D-Max closer to more high-tech rivals like the Ford Ranger, while still offering value the nameplate is known for with a sub-$70k top-spec model.

A long-standing gripe amongst owners has been the relatively basic infotainment display and interface in D-Max models, including the top-spec X-Terrain, and Isuzu has finally addressed the issue.

The range receives a new 9.0-inch display for LS-U, LS-U+ and X-Terrain, or 8.0-inch for lower-spec SX, LS-M and X-Rider models, with an updated user interface.

Isuzu uses a new ‘Gen4’ stereo camera with wider peripheral vision and depth perception for its standard safety systems, increasing the field of view by 200 per cent – now capable of seeing oncoming headlights from up to 700m away.

An improved digital reverse camera has also been included, with a hydrophobic coating to prevent water and dirt from obscuring vision.

Alongside the improved cameras, the adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic brake systems have been updated. The full five-star ANCAP safety rating from 2022 remains across the 2024 models.

The updated D-Max range will now feature Rough Terrain Mode (RTM), formerly only offered in the MU-X, which is a system that effectively tweaks the traction control to offer better off-road grip, applying brake pressure from a lower RPM than the vehicle will in normal running mode.

RTM will also work with the rear differential locked, an improvement over the system used in the MU-X, maintaining traction control across the front wheels.

Design changes are subtle, yet more distinguishable than previous facelifts of the third-generation D-Max, with new bi-LED headlights, redesigned taillights, sharper body lines and a squarer front-end.

Inside, the new range receives minor trim changes, ‘Miuri-Origami’ themed perforated leather upholstery in select models, and alongside the updated infotainment system is a redesigned multi-information display between the speedometer and tachometer.

A new X-Rider model has also been added to the range, after being offered as a special edition model last year, based on the LS-M model. It adds adventure-focused items like loopless soft tonneau and sports bar, more black accents, and black roof liner for an extra $3700.

All 2024 D-Max models are covered by the same six-year/150,000km warranty, and a revised five year/75,000km capped-price servicing program will set owners back $449 for 15,000km services.

The revised fixed-price servicing plan is 12 per cent cheaper, according to Isuzu, saving owners $310 when compared with MY23 model servicing.

“This update marks the most comprehensive update to the D-Max since local debut,” said Isuzu Ute Australia managing director Junta Matsui.

“As one of Australia’s top-selling vehicles, the D-Max represents exceptional value for money and with the addition of some new safety features, it is once again one of Australia’s safest vehicles on sale with segment leading standardised safety features on every single model – from the entry-level SX to the flagship X-Terrain.

“Not only does the 2024 D-MAX feature specifications bespoke to the Australian market, but the design changes have also been influenced by the very feedback we’ve received from the media and customers over the past three years, improving one of Australia’s favourite vehicles to make it even more appealing and competitive.”
