2013 Geneva International Motor Show

THE 2013 Geneva motor show came to a close after two weeks of hot concepts and new releases in the Swiss city.

If there was a theme for the show, it would have been sports cars, with a number of major car-makers kicking off the show by revealing some sexy new models.

One of the biggest reveals of the show was the bizarrely named Ferrari LaFerrari hybrid supercar that combined a 590kW 6.3-litre V12 engine with a 120kW electric motor for a total output of 708kW.

Not to be outdone, fellow Italian supercar-maker Lamborghini got the jump on Ferrari by ripping the covers off the wild Aventador-based Veneno concept with a 6.5-litre V12 that pushes the car to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds.

McLaren previewed the production version of its P1 hybrid hypercar, that can race to 100km in under three seconds but can run on electric power for around 20kms.

Other sporty numbers to get a showing included the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible and Porsche’s 911 GT3.

It may not be a supercar but one of the more talked-about unveilings at this year’s show was the Toyota 86 Open Concept that will go into production as the convertible version of the critically acclaimed 86 sports car.

On the luxury car front, Rolls-Royce used Geneva 2013 to show the world its first new car in four years, the 6.6-litre V12-powered Wraith coupe.

Once the more expensive models had their time in the sun, a number of more practical concepts were revealed including the Mitsubishi GR-HEV utility that previews the next generation Triton.

The Volkswagen Group showed off a couple of its upcoming wagons, with Skoda unveiling the Octavia wagon and Volkswagen giving the Golf load-lugger its first official outing.

Jeep plans to show its controversially-styled Alfa Romeo Giulietta-based Cherokee all-wheel drive while Mitsubishi will unveil its diesel-electric GR-HEV Sport Utility Hybrid Truck concept that will point to the next Triton ute.
