INDIAN automotive giant Mahindra and Mahindra marked its return to Australia via the utilitarian utility model quaintly named the Pik-Up in July 2007.

Imported by Sydney-based distributor TMI Pacific initially in NSW only, the Pik-Up came armed with sharp entry pricing, both single and dual-cab bodystyles and 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains – all powered by an intercooled common-rail 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel "CRDe" engine offering 79kW and 247Nm and mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Most significantly, it claimed to offer the biggest trays in its class, a decent 210mm of ground clearance in 4x4 guise and a proper full chassis for off-road work – but no ABS or airbags.

In July 2009 a facelifted version was claimed to offer four-star ANCAP safety with the addition of dual front airbags, front seat belt pretensioners and ABS brakes as standard equipment.

Audio controls on the tilt-adjustable steering wheel, updated interior fabrics, ergonomically designed seats, longer seatbelts and a two-DIN audio system featured in the upgraded interior.

The exterior changes included a new bonnet with air scoop plus new grille, headlights, bumper bar with standard fog lights, power rear vision mirrors in body colour/black and new exterior door handles.
