Wider, longer and roomier, the new 45kW 1.3L Civic Mk2 – in three-door hatchback and four-door wagon guises – was a more mature evolution of the successful original, but suffered for its dowdy styling, high prices, extra weight-induced lacklustre performance and lack of a five-door hatchback variant.

A minor facelift and trim revisions in late 1980 increased equipment levels, added a five-speed manual to the wagon and an improved five-speed Hondamatic gearbox option.

In early ’82 another nip and tuck added larger plastic bumpers, a new grille and headlights, a standard five-speed transmission and further cabin refinements.
