Volvo recalls XC90 for third time

Leakage: Volvo has recalled more than 15,000 XC90s globally over a possible power steering oil leak.

Almost 700 XC90 SUVs recalled by Volvo over potential power steering fault

18 May 2011

VOLVO Cars Australia has issued a national recall on its XC90 premium SUV due to a possible power steering oil leak.

The global campaign includes 691 Australian XC90s manufactured in 2010 and 2011 and falling within the VIN range 553910 – 576645.

A recall notice posted on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website says: “It is most likely that the leakage will occur gradually and slowly drain the power steering oil, generating noise and gradually decreased power steering assistance.

“In the worst case scenario, the defect may result in sudden drainage of power steering oil and a loss of power steering assistance.

“Since this may appear suddenly and without any relevant warnings to the driver, the condition poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.”

Volvo Cars Australia Jaedene Hudson told GoAuto that the recall was part of a global campaign targeting 15,300 cars.

“At this stage we have not heard of any instances of cars suffering a loss of power steering in Australia,” she said.

“Volvo Car Australia is currently contacting the 691 customers involved. The problem will be fixed free of charge.”

Last year, Volvo Cars recalled small numbers of 2010 XC90’s over possible fuel line problems, while potential issues with the fuel lines also prompted recalls on the company’s XC60 and S60 models earlier in May this year.
