Toyota Australia garners additional 10,000 vehicles

More Toyotas on the way Down Under despite global production headwinds

3 Jun 2026

TOYOTA Australia has been able to secure an additional 10,000 vehicles for customers this year, lifting its 2026 sales forecast to 220,000 units and reinforcing the local market’s importance within Toyota’s global production network.

The announcement comes at a time when Toyota is simultaneously grappling with significant international supply-chain disruption, rising production costs, and reduced output in key export markets linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite those challenges, Toyota Australia says local supply remains strong with the company’s vice-president sales, marketing and franchise operations John Pappas saying the additional allocation reflected Australia’s strategic importance to the brand.

“This increase in supply is great news for our customers and dealers,” he said.

“It reflects the strong partnership we have with Toyota globally to prioritise the Australian market.”

The additional allocation will primarily support demand for some of Toyota’s most sought-after models, including the RAV4, HiLux, and bZ4X.

The RAV4 was Australia’s best-selling SUV in 2025, while the HiLux remains Toyota’s strongest-selling vehicle locally in 2026.

Toyota says the extra production should help improve supply across dealer networks while reducing pressure on customer wait times.

The revised forecast of 220,000 sales further cements Toyota’s position as Australia’s dominant automotive brand and extends its unique status as the only manufacturer to regularly exceed 200,000 annual sales locally.

The positive Australian news contrasts with increasing challenges overseas.

Toyota recently informed suppliers it would reduce global production by approximately 83,000 vehicles over the next six months, following an earlier reduction of nearly 40,000 units in March and April.

The cuts are primarily linked to disruptions affecting Middle Eastern export markets.

According to industry reports Japanese vehicle exports to the Middle East fell more than 90 per cent in April and shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz remain heavily disrupted.

Toyota exports around 600,000 vehicles annually to the Middle East region with affected models reportedly including the HiLux, Fortuner, LandCruiser FJ, RAV4, Corolla Touring, and Probox.

Toyota is understood to be examining increased production outside Japan, including potential utilisation of facilities in Europe and Asia, to reduce dependence on vulnerable shipping routes.

As reported previously, the disruption is also affecting Toyota’s vast supplier network as key suppliers reporting shortages of aluminium, resins, paint thinners, oil-derived naphtha, and chemical solvents.

Denso and other major suppliers have warned that forecasting component availability has become increasingly difficult as geopolitical uncertainty escalates.

Toyota estimates the broader impact of the conflict and associated logistics challenges could cost the company approximately ¥670 billion ($A6.0b) through higher freight costs, delayed deliveries, material cost inflation, and weaker regional demand.

However, for Australian buyers, Toyota’s latest allocation provides reassurance that local supply remains protected despite international uncertainty.

The company says it will continue working with global production teams to secure additional vehicles where possible, ensuring demand for high-volume models such as the RAV4 and HiLux can be met.

In essence, while global supply chains remain under pressure, Australia appears to have emerged as one of Toyota’s priority markets – a position that should help insulate local customers from some of the disruption affecting other regions.
