Margot electrifies Monaco for Nissan

All-electric Nissan BladeGlider gets the Hollywood treatment from Margot

23 Feb 2017

AUSTRALIAN actor Margot Robbie has made her debut as Nissan’s zero-emissions vehicle ambassador by taking an all-electric three-seat BladeGlider prototype for a midnight fang around the streets of Monaco for a promotional mini movie.

The Queensland-born former Neighbours star-turned-Hollywood actress – star of movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street and – took the wheel to dice with another BladeGlider around parts of the famous grand prix street circuit, including the iconic tunnel and Casino Square.

She allegedly even tries her hand at drifting the BladeGlider around a water-slicked hairpin after pressing the “drift mode” button that turns off the traction control.

According to Nissan, the BladeGliders used in the video are the only two in existence, hence a warning to Ms Robbie to “be careful” as she dons a helmet and climbs aboard the radical sportscar for the drive on the Monaco streets that were closed to traffic for the shoot.

With its narrow front end and wide rear track, the BladeGlider appears to have been influenced by Nissan’s Deltawing sportscar racer.

Weighing not much more than 1300kg despite a heavy load of lithium-ion batteries, the BladeGlider has a bespoke light-weight carbon-fibre monocoque.

The rear wheels are driven by two 130kW electric motors that can power it to 100km/h in less than five seconds and on to a top speed of 190km/h.

Originally unveiled as a static concept at the 2015 Tokyo motor show and as a running prototype at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the BladeGlider is being used to promote Nissan’s electric vehicle push with vehicles such as the Leaf, Note e-Power and eNV200 van under its Electrify the World campaign.

According to Nissan Europe electric vehicles director Gareth Dunsmore, mass adoption of EVs is just around the corner.

“It is more important than ever that we showcase all of the benefits of driving an electric car – from energy efficiency, to sustainability, from handling to performance,” he said.

“Having Margot on board will support us in spreading news of the personal and societal benefits of electric vehicles to more people than ever before.

“Nissan's Electrify the World movement recognises the importance of us all working together to achieve positive change in our communities. We want to inspire people to take meaningful steps towards cleaner, safer cities."
