2013 New York International Auto Show

THE 2013 NEW YORK auto show had its fair share of reveals and surprises, with the biggest crowd-pullers arguably the Subaru WRX Concept and the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.

Being North America, the Big Apple also hosted the reveal of some important SUVs, including the next-generation Toyota Kluger, all-new Range Rover Sport and quirky-looking Jeep Cherokee.

Infiniti also unveiled a hybrid version of its QX60 luxury SUV.

Traditional sedan lovers were well catered for too, with the booted Audi A3, tyre-toasting Jaguar XJR, hot four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG and stylish facelifted Kia Optima emerging from under silk sheets during the show.

South Korean brand Kia also gave second-generation versions of its Soul city-slicker and sleek Cerato Koup their first public bow.

General Motors’ luxury brand Cadillac showed off its twin-turbo V6 engine, which gives an HSV V8 a run for its money – and could conceivably end up under the bonnet of a future Holden Commodore.

Also in the GM compound was the surprise arrival of the aforementioned Chevy Camaro Z/28, a fire-breathing version of the Australian-engineered coupe with a 7.0-litre V8 shoehorned under the bonnet.

The road-legal track car produces 373kW of power and 637Nm of torque and is 90kg lighter than a standard Camaro – although the rear seats have been retained, air-conditioning is optional.

But stealing the show for many was Subaru’s WRX concept, previewing the next generation of the Japanese brand’s rally-bred sports machine.

No technical details about the upcoming Impreza-based speed demon were released, but Subaru officials promised it will retain its turbocharged boxer engine and all-wheel drive layout, while applying what the company learnt while developing the BRZ coupe with Toyota.

TIM NICHOLSONTHIS year’s New York auto show is just days away from kicking off with a number of concepts and new models scheduled to appear in the Big Apple.

Chief among them is the all new Jeep Cherokee that has been given a radical redesign with a controversial front end and a sleek shape, moving away from the boxy style of the current vehicle.

Range Rover will reveal its popular Sport SUV, which is fitting given that its biggest market in the world is New York.

Built on the same Premium Lightweight Architecture platform as the recently-released Range Rover, the Sport promises to be lighter and more efficient than the outgoing model.

Keeping with the luxury SUV theme, Infiniti will rip the covers off its hybrid QX60 crossover that has fuel consumption figures of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres which is comparable to a smaller car.

Adding to the list of SUVs to be revealed at New York is the Toyota Highlander which will eventually arrive in Australia as the Kluger in the first half of next year.
