High-tech future Fuso revealed

FUSO’S new Super Great, known as the Shogun here, stands front and centre on the truck maker’s stand at the Japan Mobility Show, the first complete redesign since the model was launched in 2017.

Available for order later this year in Japan, the new Fuso flagship offers improved aerodynamics, driveline efficiency, comfort and safety, showcasing the latest Daimler Group technology.

While Australia and New Zealand already have a 13-litre Shogun 510 model available, the only two countries to receive the 510 model, this is the first time Fuso has introduced the larger engine option for other markets.

The secret is in the highly-efficient redesign of the ‘6R30’ 12.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, which has been tweaked to offer a higher NOx purification rate and fuel economy improvements despite its large displacement.

Fuso will offer two variants of the new 6R30 engine, one producing 290kW/2000Nm and the other producing 310kW/2100Nm, both making peak torque at a lazy 1100rpm.

The new 6R30 utilises improved thermal efficiency through the use of increased combustion pressure - a result of higher compression ratio and optimised boost pressure - to achieve lower fuel consumption.

A comfort-focused cab with a new ‘super high roof’ provides an expansive home away from home for operators as well as more storage than ever, complete with ambient lighting.

In fact, the high-roof also offers the dual benefit of improved aerodynamics, reducing drag and improving fuel economy due to its roofline.

The Fuso ‘black belt’ motif features around the truck, both inside and out, representing a design language that spans the product line up from light- to heavy-duty offerings. The new Super Great will also receive LED headlights as standard and combination LED tail-lights will be optional across the range.

Improved aerodynamics, engine efficiency and low rolling resistance tyres allow the incoming Super Great to achieve JH25 compliance - Japan’s latest fuel efficiency standard.

Back in 2019, Fuso was the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to introduce Level 2 automated driving aids on a truck, leveraging Daimler Group technology, and the Super Great takes advantage of this technology.

The Super Great will score advanced safety technology, with the brand’s latest brake assist collision mitigation, active side guard assist, front blind-spot warnings and a rear-view camera system as standard.

“The heavy-duty Shogun range is more popular than ever in Australia thanks to its safety, power and durability,” said Fuso Truck and Bus Australia vice president, Alex Müller.

“It is too early to discuss the details of the Australian heavy-duty Shogun line-up, including timing.

“These details will be finalised after the comprehensive local testing and evaluation making sure the specifications and applications perfectly match the unique requirements of the Australian market.”
