Future models - BMW - AlpinaAlpina shifts up a gearBMW’s luxury performance sub-brand Alpina moves upmarket with dramatic V8 concept18 May 2026 BMW has shown its vision for the revamped BMW Alpina brand via a dramatic V8-powered concept car that previews the marque’s repositioning as a high-end luxury performance offering sitting between BMW and Rolls-Royce.
The Vision BMW Alpina was unveiled at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at Lake Como in Italy and marks the first major public “statement” since BMW assumed full control of Alpina, signalling a strategic shift for the long-running performance specialist.
Rather than operating purely as a tuner-style derivative brand, BMW Alpina will now be positioned as a distinct premium marque targeting affluent buyers seeking understated luxury, long-distance comfort and “effortless” performance.
The first production Alpina model will arrive next year, inspired by the 7 Series.
BMW Alpina vice president Oliver Viellechner said: “the brand fills a gap in our (BMW) Group portfolio between BMW and Rolls-Royce”.
The strategy puts Alpina up against premium luxury rivals such as Bentley, Mercedes-Maybach, Range Rover SV and upper-tier Porsche products rather than its prior role as a more discreet and luxury-focused alternative to traditional BMW M performance models.
It reflects BMW’s view that growth remains strong in the ultra-premium segment, particularly among high-net-worth buyers seeking exclusivity without overt ostentation.
The Vision BMW Alpina is a 5200mm-long four-seat coupé powered by a V8 engine, though technical specifications remain undisclosed.
Its proportions echo classic Alpina grand tourers, with a long bonnet, sweeping roofline and broad stance designed to balance high-speed capability with four-seat comfort.
Design cues include a reinterpretation of BMW’s shark-nose front end, illuminated closed kidney grille, modernised Alpina deco-lines beneath the clear coat, signature 20-spoke wheels (22-inch front / 23-inch rear), quad elliptical exhaust outlets and warm white lighting inspired by Alpine sunrise tones.
BMW Group head of design Adrian van Hooydonk said preserving Alpina’s identity was central to the project.
“Alpina has always represented a very specific idea of performance and refinement,” he said.
A defining Alpina philosophy remains intact – comfort enhances speed.
BMW says the brand’s signature Comfort+ setting – softer and more refined than BMW’s existing comfort calibrations – will remain a core differentiator.
Inside, the concept focuses heavily on grand touring luxury, with a full-grain leather sourced from Alpina suppliers, crystal-finished controls, Alpina-specific digital graphics, panoramic iDrive interface, passenger display, rear crystal glassware deployment system and a glass water bottle storage console.
The concept embodies “second read sophistication” – subtle luxury details that reveal themselves over time rather than demanding immediate attention, says BMW.
For obvious reasons, the German manufacturer appears keen to clearly separate Alpina from BMW M.
Where M remains focused on sharper outright performance, Alpina will continue prioritising effortless speed, ride comfort and discreet exclusivity.
That distinction mirrors the historic character of Alpina models which traditionally delivered rapid cross-continent capability rather than track-focused aggression.
The first new Alpina production model is expected in 2027 and likely based on the 7 Series, with an X7 derivative tipped to follow.
The company says it will pursue a “top-down” strategy, initially prioritising high-margin flagship products.
Production volumes are expected to remain limited, roughly in line with Alpina’s historical annual output of around 2500 vehicles.
The Vision BMW Alpina makes clear the marque’s future lies not in competing directly with BMW M, but in carving out a niche for discreet ultra-luxury performance.
For reference, BMW acquired Alpina in 2022, allowing the Bovensiepen family-run business to continue independently through 2025 before bringing the brand fully in-house this year. ![]() Read more7th of May 2026 ![]() BMW M3 EV to match ICE pricing: reportQuad-motor electric BMW M3 to produce close to 746kW, priced closely to ICE siblingAll future modelsMotor industry news |
