Range Rover Sport Electric breaks cover

RANGE ROVER has provided the first official look at its forthcoming Range Rover Sport Electric previewing the all-electric luxury SUV at Goodwood Festival of Speed ahead of its full reveal later this year.

The new model will become the second battery-electric vehicle from the British marque following the launch of the full-size Range Rover Electric and is expected to introduce the most performance-focused electrified powertrain yet offered in a Range Rover Sport that already includes potent PHEVs and MHEVs.

Although technical specifications remain under wraps, Range Rover says the new model has been engineered to deliver more power, greater responsiveness, and a more engaging driving experience than any previous Sport.

The prototype made its public debut during a series of dynamic demonstrations at Goodwood, drawing inspiration from the Range Rover Sport’s history of high-profile engineering feats, including the Heaven’s Gate staircase climb in China and Iceland’s Karahnjukar dam ascent.

Range Rover managing director Martin Limpert said electrification would further enhance the Sport’s dynamic character.

“Electric power brings a new edge to Range Rover Sport,” he said.

“The preview at Goodwood Festival of Speed is only a glimpse of how this model will redefine performance SUVs again later this year, combining the refinement and immediate performance of electric drive while further elevating the unmistakable character of Range Rover Sport.”

Industry sources indicate the Sport Electric will share much of its electrical architecture with the forthcoming Range Rover Electric, including a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and large-capacity battery pack with 118.5kWh capacity.

While Range Rover has yet to confirm specifications, overseas reports suggest outputs of around 404kW and 850Nm are likely, placing the electric flagship among the most powerful vehicles the brand has produced.

The electric variant is expected to utilise the same MLA Flex architecture as the existing Range Rover Sport and is likely to offer fast charging capability through an 800-volt electrical system.

Visually, the prototype closely mirrors the existing combustion-powered Range Rover Sport, reinforcing the brand’s strategy of maintaining familiar design language regardless of powertrain.

When it joins the range later this year, the Sport Electric will complete one of the industry’s broadest luxury SUV powertrain portfolios, sitting alongside plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid V8, petrol, and diesel variants.

Further technical specifications, pricing and market availability will be announced closer to launch.
