THE Cross Country shares its 2435cc low-pressure turbocharged all-aluminium engine with its close relation, the V70 2.4T, as well as the S60 sedan. It develops a maximum of 147kW at 6000rpm, but far more impressively holds its 285 Newton-metre torque peak from 1800rpm to 5000rpm, aiding engine flexibility enormously. A rare inline five-cylinder design, this generation of the engine has continuously variable exhaust valve timing, which Volvo says provides cleaner tailpipe outputs and smoother idle quality. Many of the reciprocating parts have been reduced in mass and size which is claimed to reduce engine vibration and noise as well as improve throttle response. Volvo claims an 8.6 second 0-100km/h acceleration for the manual Cross Country (add 0.4 sec for the auto), and a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.45 L/100km (make it 9.6L/100km for the auto).
