Volvo recalls T5 manual models

VOLVO Australia has issued its second safety recall this month, this time for a manual gear-shift lever that might become loose on some of its high-performance T5 turbo models.

The recall concerns 34 top-end 2010-model C30 hatch, C70 convertible, S40 sedan and V50 wagon vehicles equipped with Volvo’s 2.5-litre turbo-charged engine with six-speed manual transmission.

Volvo says a ball joint and cylinder pin on the gear shift lever might be mounted with incorrect torque, leading to the ball joint becoming loose.

“The driver will be unable to change gears which could create an unsafe driving situation,” the company says in its official recall notice.

“However, the driver will be able to stop the vehicle by depressing the clutch, brake and turning off the ignition.”Of the 34 vehicles in the recall, a third are still in Volvo stock, and of the others, 15 per cent have already been rectified.

Owners of the remaining vehicles are asked to take these vehicles to their Volvo dealer to have the ball joint tightened.

The recall applies to vehicles with the following Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) ranges: C30: 182625 -213511 C70: 098008 – 099383 S40: 497461 – 514357 V50: 543653 – 579597.

On June 1, Volvo recalled 482 2009 S80, XC70 and XC60 cars to fix a faulty belt tensioner on D5 diesel engines.
