VOLVO offers a number of variants on the five-cylinder engine theme, including a normally aspirated ultra-low emission engine on the 20V, a low-pressure turbo on the 2.4T and the top-of-the-range turbocharged T5 engine sampled here. You pay a hefty price for privilege of the 2.3-litre double overhead cam 20-valve T5 engine, which generates a class-leading 184kW at 5200rpm and 330Nm from 2400rpm to 5200rpm. Official fuel consumption figures for the manual T5 point to 10.2 L/100km for the city cycle. All engines feature continuous variable valve timing (CVVT), providing greater low-speed torque and lower fuel consumption. They also all require premium unleaded petrol.
