VOLVO’S S80 sedan was hardly a sales champion for the Swedish car-maker in Australia and it was not up to the standard of other offerings in the premium large car segment, notably the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF.

But with the backing of new owner, Chinese automotive giant Geely, Volvo is back in a big way, as it has already proven with its all-new XC90 SUV that arrived last year.

Sharing the big SUV’s underpinnings, Volvo aims to finally make its mark in the competitive landscape, despite the relatively low volumes of large executive sedans, and the S90 is its best chance yet.
