VOLKSWAGEN started the ball rolling back in 1978 with its Mk1 Golf GLD, but it was not until the surprising popularity of the fifth-generation Golf TDI in 2004 that diesel premium small cars became a reality for Australians. Now, with Audi and BMW also in the front line, Volvo has joined the club with the C30 D5, packing not four cylinders, but a five-cylinder powerplant similar to the one that has no trouble hauling around the big Volvo XC90 SUV. And you now what? The Volvo may have just become the first true four-seater coupe with diesel motivation in Australia.
