VOLKSWAGEN sure knows how to build workhorses, as the six-year-old T5 range proves. Now, significant upgrades include new high-tech diesel engines, optional DSG dual-clutch gearbox, standard stability control and a raft of fresh safety, comfort, refinement and convenience features designed to keep the Germans at the top of the class. VW is even targeting the big-selling Toyota HiAce and Hyundai’s increasingly more popular iLoad with cheaper versions of some models, even though the abolition of the base petrol van means that the price of Transporter entry rises by about $6000. Still, as all the activity seems to happen in the high-$30K zone, it appears VW is ready for a fight.
