Volkswagen finally unveils Tiguan

VOLKSWAGEN has released undisguised images of its new Tiguan compact SUV.

As part of a long-running media drip feed, VW has also confirmed the dimensions of the new prestige wagon. The Tiguan is 4.4 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.6 metres tall.

That compares to the Land Rover Freelander at 4.5 metres long, 1.9 metres wide and 1.7 metres tall and the BMW X3, which is 4.5 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.6 metres tall.

Apart from these rivals, the new Volkswagen will also have to compete with similar vehicles including the upcoming Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, although it is expected to have the sharpest pricing in the class.

Volkswagen Australia will launch the Tiguan in Australia in 2008 - the same year Audi's Q5 is expected to be released here. The Volvo XC60 and rumoured Mercedes-Benz MLK compact SUV are likely to be further afield.

Land Rover Australia's new Freelander 2 went on sale on July 1 priced from $49,990, joining BMW's $8000-dearer compact premium SUV segment pioneer.
