Farewell VW Scirocco on sale November

BY DANIEL GARDNER | 10th Oct 2016

VOLKSWAGEN has confirmed that its swansong Scirocco R Wolfsburg will be limited to just 30 manual examples when it goes on sale on November 14 this year, priced from $49,490 before on-road costs or $51,990 for one of the 120 DSG versions.

With ailing sales of the hot coupe hatch, the German car-maker has called it time on the Scirocco but is sending the Golf-based high-performance model out with a bang and a special run of 150 examples that honour the company’s home town.

Fast acting customers will be asked a $3500 premium over the standard R but are offered a number of exclusive enhancements to differentiate the limited version from its more orthodox siblings.

The Wolfsburg is up for grabs dressed in a choice of either pearl Oryx White or metallic Rising Blue paint to contrast the unique 19-inch Lugano alloy wheels and matching black mirror caps.

On the inside, Volkswagen has upgraded the standard sports seats to deeply-bucketed motorsport-style seats with R branding, the multi-function display is ‘premium’ spec, while an individually-numbered plaque identifies the more exclusive versions.

The performance-focused seats offer more support for front-row occupants and add a purposeful look, but Volkswagen advises that the upgrade comes at the sacrifice of side airbags, which are housed in the bolsters of the standard seat.

Customers can add a panoramic sunroof into the mix for an extra $1750.

Volkswagen Group Australia managing director Michael Bartsch said the Scirocco deserved a special send off and that the limited edition would appeal to true VW enthusiasts.

“It’s fitting that we see off the Scirocco in such spectacular fashion,” he said. “This limited edition is one to keep enthusiasts happy at track days or on winding, weekend drives for many years to come.”The company has recently introduced feisty versions of the Passat and Tiguan which borrow the accomplished 2.0-litre turbo from the Golf GTI hot hatch and Mr Bartsch said the introduction of the Scirocco R Wolfsburg heralded more performance-focused models from the brand.

“Volkswagen will continue to present new performance models and Wolfsburg editions through 2017.”Beyond the special equipment, the rarer Scirocco is unchanged over the standard item, including its 188kW/330Nm turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, which lives at the front end and drives the front wheels.
